Denver, CO – Michael L. Drapkin, a patent attorney with the intellectual property law firm Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP, is the new Chair of the Colorado Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section. Drapkin assumes the Chair position after serving as an officer of the Section for the past two years, and specifically as the Section’s Vice-Chair since May 2008.
During Drapkin’s term as an officer, he spearheaded a number of ongoing initiatives to raise the profile of Colorado as a leader in the practice of intellectual property law. One such initiative involves regularly bringing national leaders of intellectual property law to Colorado for educational and speaking events. Drapkin led the planning of a debate during the 2008 Democratic National Convention that featured the leading intellectual property advisors for the Obama and McCain campaigns. In addition, he led the organization of the May 28, 2009 panel on IP and technology policy in the Obama administration, featuring several of President Obama’s top IP advisors. Drapkin also facilitated collaborations with a number of other legal and technology organizations, and brought together an Advisory Board to develop a new five-year strategic plan for the Section.
“It has been extremely rewarding to be in a position to advocate for my peers and my profession,” said Drapkin. “I look forward to bringing more national caliber programs to Denver and expanding leadership opportunities for Section members.”
At Townsend, Drapkin’s practice focuses on strategic patent counseling in the electronics and computer fields. Besides his service to the Colorado Bar, he also serves on the Board of the Silicon Flatirons Law and Technology Program. A graduate of the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Drapkin earned his law degree at the University of California, Davis.
